The way we maintain a continual infilling and walk in the Spirit is through speaking divinely inspired utterances to the Lord. These divinely inspired utterances can have several different means of expression.
One way is to magnify and worship God in other tongues. We see this in Acts "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Paul was speaking to every believer when he said we are to speak to ourselves in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. This is something we are to do in our personal communion with God. A psalm is a spiritual poem or ode.
It may or may not rhyme, but there is an element of poetry about it. It may be sung, chanted, or recited. A person given to music would naturally sing a psalm given by the Spirit. Others who are not inclined to sing would simply speak out the psalm. Many times, God will give us a psalm in our private prayer life for our benefit. On the other hand, a hymn is a song of praise and worship addressed to and directed toward God.
A spiritual song brings forth the revelation of the word that the Holy Spirit has given you. It may be a scripture, a word of encouragement, a word of exhortation, and so forth. Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs are given by the Holy Spirit. They're "hot off the wire" from Heaven. Jesus called this kind of utterance New Testament worship. Once we are initially filled with the Spirit and speak supernaturally, we are to continue speaking supernaturally.
Ephesians —19 and Colossians are talking about the supernatural utterance the Holy Spirit gives us on the spur of the moment by the spirit of prophecy. What is prophecy? It is inspired utterance in a known tongue. The simple gift of prophecy "speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort" 1 Cor. It should not be confused with the prophet's office, which often gives revelation of the future. According to First Corinthians , every believer should prophesy—or, in other words, should speak to himself in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs in his private devotional life.
Consider what Paul wrote to the church at Corinth: "When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm" 1 Cor. It has many different categories. Psalms can be an individual as well as multiple.
Sometimes multiple Psalms are composed in a single composition. Psalms often tend to be part of a larger group. The Book of Psalms or Psalms has always been an important part of Christianity and catholic liturgy. The Liturgy of hours is often denoted as the chanting or singing of psalms into the church using psalms tones.
The themes of most of the psalms are the praise of God, his beneficence and power, his creation of the world, his deliverance of the people of Israel. Various types of Psalms include hymns, royal Psalms, Communal laments, Individual laments, individual thanksgiving psalms etc. Psalms have been composed by many different authors, and their authorship is still debate.
It was composed between the 9th and 5th centuries BC. A hymn is a religious song in the form of prayers or adoration. It is addressed to God and deities. But in other religions of the world, hymns are also prominent, especially in India.
Hymns have existed in Greek and Egyptian culture since time innumerable. Some of the very oldest surviving hymns in the world can be found in Greek culture. Hymns are not meant for instrumental composition. Christian hymnody is generally based on the Book of Psalms.
Christian hymns are all related to the praise of God and directly or indirectly connected to Jesus Christ. Spiritual songs are also called Negro spirituals, African-American spirituals or Spiritual music. It is the genre of music that was started by African Americans.
The trend of composing spiritual songs started when there was a slave trade going on in the world. Spiritual songs contain a range from plantation songs to work songs which eventually led to the creation of gospel songs in church. See a translation. The one learning a language!
