What that refers to are the color bands on the coral snake. They are very similar to those seen on a scarlet king snake. They prefer floodplain forests and other moist places. They are smaller in size than the diamondback rattlesnake, with adults ranging three to five feet.
What distinguishes the timber rattlesnake from the diamondback is a reddish-brown stripe down its spine. Full-grown, they can be two to three feet long. The juvenile snakes have a yellow tip to their tail. We have only once heard of hikers encountering them. Their known range is from the Apalachicola River west to Pensacola.
Treat it with respect. It is not always easy to make a quick judgment on whether a snake is venomous or not.

I see them during the day a lot sunning themselves. They are not poisonous. If you startle one or corner it, it will rear up at you like a cobra. I've even seen one do this from the surface of our pool.
They don't back down until you retreat. The Ringnecks are poisonous not deadly though but they are very docile and usually fairly small. When we see one, my husband catches it and lets the kids handle it. Usually we only see them when we are gardening and disturb them because they are more nocturnal. I don't know what the little green snakes are that my kids see at school but they are afraid of people and quickly seek cover if encountered.

We thought we had conquered the problem, but we still heard squirrels getting in, so they returned to reassess and finish the job. They actually pulled up our deck boards and found that the critters were getting in because of a rotted board underneat the cantilever.
