Why procedures and practices are followed in the scientific workplace

In case someone spills a chemical on themselves which is corrosive and can cause harm or get something in their eyes Wear the appropriate dress for work in the laboratory. For example clothing that covers your skin and stops chemicals which could splash on your skin and cause harm also if you have long hair you should tie it back.

Never eat food or drink beverages in the lab as dangerous chemicals could be splashed or be splashed on the desk and contaminate the food or drink and if drunken or eaten could cause serious damage or death. Make sure you should behaviour yourself in a responsible and professional manner at all times there should be No pranks and No practical jokes as this could lead to harm to another person.

Know the locations of the fire alarms which are closest to you and at least two to three ways out of the building. Share this: Twitter Facebook. Name required. Calibration of equipment Calibration of equipment is an important procedure and practice because it verifies that accurate and reliable results can be obtained. The information the equipment gives must always be accurate because it can be used to determine certain things later on for example, certain chemicals.

An example of an equipment that is calibrated are PH metres as they can determine the nature of PH solutions. If PH metres were not calibrated, then they may not be able to give readings that can be reproduced by others which decreases the accuracy of results.

Handling of materials. It is very important that materials are handled with precaution because if they are not it can lead to materials being damaged or breaking. This is a disadvantage because majority of laboratory equipment are expensive, and purchase of the same equipment could be difficult for the company as it could exceed their budget. Handling of materials involves carefully and properly storing, identifying and disposing materials.

Handling and use of glassware. Glassware has important uses in the scientific industry because they play a big factor on how experiments can run smoothly. Glassware in the scientific workplace is very fragile.

This means that when handling glass a scientist would use both hands to avoid breaking equipment. Hot or cold glass should be handled with insulated gloves to avoid accidents.

Glassware are used in many ways for example, beakers are used for mixing and transporting fluids and Pipets are used for drawing precise measurements of fluids. Carrying out the procedures and practices as told to do so also avoids any disruptions, and keeps running things in a smooth manner. Procedures are important as results can come out incorrect if there may be damage to equipment that is being used. This can lead to wrong conclusions, wasted time and wasted resources.

Broken or damaged wires and electrical can cause shock or fires. To do avoid these hazardous possibilities, scientists need to check for faults regularly.

Moving equipment should be done in an appropriate way, handling the equipment without causing injury to yourself or others around, and not doing damage to the equipment itself.
