As we are witnessing, in the last few years, India has been hurtling downwards to an unknown future. Covid 19 has further intensified the downfall, human and democratic rights stand compromised, free press is not visible, constitutional institutions including judiciary has seen erosion in its respect in the eyes of the people. And in this period, India has seen the most vicious and sinister campaign against opposition parties and their leaders, most of all against the Congress Party and its top leadership, especially Rahul Gandhi.
A cacophony Guha joins too readily. Despite so much personal loss, Rahul Gandhi and his family members have led the fight to uphold the idea of India and the principles enshrined in our Constitution. Rahul Gandhi is not a power hungry politician; rather, it is a battle of ideologies, what he is striving for is a paradigm shift in the manner politics is done in the country. There has also been a constant attempt to deligitimise opposition parties, civil society organisations and independent commentators.
There is a reason why the Modi-Shah regime wants to build a Congress Mukt bharat — because the Congress offers the most effective counter to their majoritarian politics. Though the likes of Mr. Guha have consistently failed in creating an alternative political narrative based on secularism and social justice, their contribution to legitimising Hindutva has been significant. This is done by delegitimising Congress, and legitimising the BJP by constantly juxtaposing the ills of the BJP with supposed failings of the Congress.
In this manner, they have also contributed to the BJP efforts to weaken the Congress. Since Mr. Guha believes in his own intellectualism and the greatness of his ideas, he should consider compiling his pieces of the last 10 years. Can Mamata go national?

Finally, it will pose the question: while Gandhi and Ambedkar were undoubtedly political rivals in their lifetime, now, sixty years after both have passed on, should we not draw on both their legacies in the still unfinished fight against prejudice and orthodoxy?

Of late, attention is also being paid to his work as a writer and editor.
