His appeal has nothing to do with his having stomped an opposing player on national television, getting arrested for manslaughter or dogfighting, griping incessantly about his contract, or any of the other unseemly issues that hover over the NFL in any given week.
Also, Tebow's image is so squeaky clean that it's almost irritating, so there's little chance that he's going to bring negative publicity down on the league. While there's very little doubt that "Tebowing" is irritating, his appeal has also become something of an Internet phenomenon and another source of positive press for the NFL. This makes him a hero because he is spending his own money and time to serve the kids. All children matter and to go out and provide them with the basics that every person needs instead of lining his own bank account makes him a hero.
