The town is dominated by the imposing Romanesque-Gothic Church of St. Peter from the 12th century. Fritzlar lies on the north bank of the Eder river in an area characterized by fertile farmland and wooded basalt peaks, many of which are topped by mediaeval castles or castle ruins. After destroying the Donar Oak tree so meaningful to the Germanic peoples, Anglo-Saxon missionary Saint Boniface forcefully established a church and monastery here in Birthplace of the German Empire Located at the crossroads of several important trade routes and site of an imperial residence since Charlemagne, Fritzlar was a frequent site of royal visits and of assemblies and synods of the German princes and church leaders during the early Middle Ages.
This event marked the end of the bitter rivalry between the 2 large German tribes of the Franks and the Saxons and the beginning of the German Empire that lasted until the Napoleonic wars.
Quelle: flic. The religious center of the town also drew in royalty, creating more prestige for the town and providing protection for the buildings. The first German Reich was born here, and Fritzlar remains an administrative center for the area. If the seriousness of all that Fritzlar has to offer is intimidating, there is one lighter fact about the town to consider. Hengstenberg operates a processing plant here, as the area is a premier growing zone for cabbages.
